Solitary Lyrics
Artist: VNV Nation
Album: Praise The Fallen
Set me aflame and cast me free
Away you wretched world of tethers
Through the endless night and day
I have never wanted more.
Always thought that I would stand
Before the faceless name of Justice
Like some law unto myself
Like a child of God again.
And if rain brings winds of change
Let it rain on us forever
I have no doubts from what I've seen
I have never wanted more.
With this line I'll mark the past
As a symbol of beginning
I have no doubt from what I've seen
I have never wanted more.
In this picture stands a man
Far away, alone and distant
Like a solitary field
In some nameless foreign land.
All around him points of light
Start to dim and cease transmitting
Shadows fell on futile games
And then there was nothing more.
Through the screams of falling steel
By the light of flares and wisdom
All the doubts I could not face
All this time I wanted more.
With a line I mark the past
As a symbol of beginning
To the gods whose names we've lost
And the names who gave in vain.
And if rain brings winds of change
Let it rain on us forever
I have no doubts from what I've seen
I have never wanted more.
With this line I'll mark the past
As a symbol of beginning
I have no doubt from what I've seen
I have never wanted more.
Set me aflame and cast me free
Away you wretched world of tethers
Through the endless night and day
I have never wanted more.
Always thought that I would stand
Before the faceless name of Justice
Like some law unto myself
Like a child of God again.
And if rain brings winds of change
Let it rain on us forever
I have no doubts from what I've seen
I have never wanted more.
With this line I'll mark the past
As a symbol of beginning
I have no doubt from what I've seen
I have never wanted more.
Sever the line to the guilty past
To the ones who brought us nothing
Spoke of futures brave and proud
And brought only hate and war.
Lined the roads with hollow praise
Marked the land with paper statues
Shadows fell on their futile ways
And then there was nothing more

Comments/Interpretations
great lyrics once again from VNV Nation...those guys really know how to touch some sensitive sides of a man's soul
Because Ronan Harris is one amazing lyricists and composer.
This is an amazing song.
really good song.amazing lyrics love vnv nation
vnv nation forever
Nothing, Forever.
Very Christian in perspective...
Yes very Christian.
It's universally suitable. Thats talent
Really Peter and KT They said so themselves they use the words 'god', 'hell', and so on as metaphors; using what those words represent, rather than literal things/places. They don't subscribe to any religion. They take the Humanist approach. Well, just take it whatever you want, but just letting you know that. :3
Very very good lyrics, just as almost every VNV nation song.
These are the dumbest lyrics I've ever read. They sound as if an elementary schooler is trying to use all the "important-sounding" words he can think of.
"Through the endless night and day
I have never wanted more."
So your want is currently less than or equal to the want level that you had during an unlimited period of time (an "endless night and day")? Gosh, thanks for clearing that up.
J, the only thing here that's at an elementary school level is your ability to interpret lyrical text...
"endless night and day" is meant as a hyperbolic statement. As in those times when all days seem to meld together due to the stagnant state of one's life. Or it could even refer to data that seem endless due to the "wretchedness" of the world. Regardless, it is metaphorical for the state of one's life.
Further, "never wanted more" most likely refers to the longing to be set free which was previously mentioned.
Take a literary analysis class or something dude. Ronan's syntax may not be perfect but seriously, it's not that hard to understand what it means. Way to completely miss the mark.
Now that's some ill guided comment from J. That's what I fear the most in this life. People who are not affraid to jugde without trying to understand what they judge...
