Get Along Little Doggies Lyrics

Artist: Woody Guthrie
Album: Struggle

Oh, little doggies,
It's your misfortune and not of my own.
Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o get along little doggies,
You know that Wyoming will be your new home.

A cattle trail drunk and a hard road to travel,
That old Jack O' Diamonds is a hard card to play.
Get along, get along, get along little doggies,
Get along little doggies and be on your way.

Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o get along little doggies,
It's your misfortune and not of my own.
Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o get along little doggies,
You know that Wyoming will be your new home.

Some boys have bit this old cow trail for pleasure,
But that's where they get it most awfully wrong.
I wish I could tell you the troubles they give us,
As we go rolling these doggies along.

Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o get along little doggies,
It's your misfortune and not of my own.
Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o get along little doggies,
You know that Wyoming will be your new home.

I prefer the duet with Cisco Houston. I guess he was too good looking to be taken seriously but not good looking enough to play leading man.

Like they say, "That old Jack O' Diamonds is a hard card to play."

My memory goes back to the fifties, when traditional folk songs were sung so peacefully.
Its been a relief and pleasure to re-discover that ordinariness of straight singin. on so many YouTUBE selections . . Woody Guthrie, a guy from the Isle of Man, even the Kingston Trio.
Much appreciated!

This song refers to the cowboys of the 1850s. Taking the Texas Log Horn Steers from south Texas up the trail to the railhead or to the Indian Reservations beyond.

@Sieglinda L. Dawson: Other sites say dogies are motherless (cow) calves; 1 of them says "dogie" is a corruption of "dough-gut" because such calves were pot-gutted (presumably from lack of milk).

@carteroaks: dogies are bovines; doggies are canines.
