I cried a tear, you wiped it dry
I was confused, you cleared my mind
I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me
You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me
And I can't believe it's you
I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave?
I'd be a fool 'cause I finally found someone who really cares
You held my hand when it was cold
When I was lost you took me home
You gave me hope when I was at the end
And turned my lies back into truth again
You even called me "friend"
You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me
You needed me, you needed me

Comments/Interpretations
She must be talking about Jesus.
I totally agree, there is no one who can be all that, and do all that at the same time, what a powerful lyrics, it must be from a lost or a sinner's perspective to God that is so humble, willing and able like Jesus.
This is a wonderful song!!!!!!! So inspiring, one would have to really listen to the words and have dealt with life in ordre to relate to the words in this song and to know that when one really needed Jesus ,he was right there, despite our faults or our shortcomings, when we really needed HIM,He was there. He gave me hope when I was at my end, is the part that truly touches my soul!!!!
First of all I don't understand the title. Whomever is the person or entity that the words are spoken to it is the singer (SINNER??)who needed him or her.
And the interpretation, wether it is Jesus, your Guardian Angel or only a good human being depends on the beliefs of the interpreter
Only the author can say to whom were this grateful words dedicated.
I pray for you merisofi. For Jesus love you! He is the author and the finisher of love.
Supposedly this was written as a dedication to a sponsor of an alcoholic.
I want to share my opinion about the title.I think it's a passive voice, which described to regard someone special to be number one in his/her heart deeply inside.Unbelievable!!!I really like this song.I send my love for my best friend.
Sounds like a prayer...
It is a wonderful love song...
And it is "our song" for my wife and I. We met in 1979, married in 1980.
At the time, I was going through a very painfull divorse. My ex left me and filed for divorse. She made it very clear she didn't want anything further to do with me. She had (still has) a very cutting tongue. She insulted and verbally abused me. Naturally I felt rejected and down-cast.
Then along came the woman who was to become my future wife. (And we are still married after nearly 30 years!) She is an Anne Murray fan and this song was popular at the time. We played the song often as we went driving through the country side - first as friends. We fell in love. And this song says it all regarding what she means to me and what she did for me.
And for what she still does for me!
What can I do to listen to the music of this wonderful song?
such strong words. this song is a thrill
Though this song would to an extent make a good prayer, I'd have to disagree that it is a message to Christ, nowhere do we see that Christ needs us, we need him.
My interpretation; a lost person, who feels their life is over, in comes a true, loving, friend who shows them what life is truly about. Real relationships are based on every word of this song. Real people of compassion are always there for the other person, but need the other person as well. I use this song as a foundation of who I desire to be in a relationship. I believe if others did as well, the divorce rate in America would be far less!
Regardless how one may interpret it, I do agree it is an absolutely beautiful song, a powerful song and not surprising #1 the year it was released.
This song is 1 of the most beautiful songs i ever heard,it could be a prayer to Jesus ,or to who ever you believe in. but to me,well,to me it is about my daugther, because she means everything to me what this song is telling about, and more.
the beautiful song
this song is my family favorite song..
Cause the lyrics are very beautiful..
This song changed my life. I enjoy listeing to it and singing alond with it. It is so beautiful and inspiring. This song means so much to me that I even sang it in Sacrament meeting to my friends.
This song so fits my life. . .
I had been diagnosed with MS at 13, I became depressed and alone and wanted to die. Then before my dad passed he allowed me to try another caregiver after several abusive ones. One arrived and fulfilled everything in this song, and he needed me too! I now realize that Jesus sent him.
I agree, it is talking about God..
however the title needs to be changed to. "I NEEDED THEE". the lyrics are beautiful.
i like this cause it means that God is always there for in happiness and in sorrow
This song made me cry the first time I heard it. I had been in a marriage for ten years to a man who clearly did not love me anymore. I had been a stay at home mother, but went to work and got a divorce. I met my second husband at work and he was EVERYTHING to me. We met in 1979 and married in 1981. I loved him so much. We loved the song "Key Largo" and it meant so much to us. Two years after we married, we went on a fabulous trip to Key West and Key Largo, FL. I loved him so much and he loved me. As I said, he was EVERYTHING to me. EVERYTHING. Unfortunately, as the years passed there was just too many things that he did that I kept forgiving him for and one day he did something I will "NEVER" forgive him for. We divorced in 2008. But, every time I hear "Key Largo" my heart breaks and I get upset and cry about our lost love. I will never forget that "we had it all."
This song speaks of and to Christ. We do need Him, but He needs us in return. We are His body on Earth, His hands, His feet, His eyes, His whole body. I pray every day for His strengh and for Him to hold my hand throughout the day to guide me. He does care so much for us. He truly loves us and always has and forever will because we belong to Him. He is always there for us. He needs us, and we need Him.
Geart song
it s for sure about Jezus and maybe also for the love of your life, but this is for sure Jesus, and when i man do this all for a woman, it will be sure the love for your life
This song was a great inspiration for me to stay sober. I found my Higher Power, whom I choose to call God,in this song and attributed it to AA.I cried and finally surrendered. I am 31 years sober and straight.
Silly me. I always thought it was a love song
Whenever I hear this song I want to sing it aloud to my husband in front of the whole world. I am not an alcoholic and I am not particularly religious but I did have a very difficult time emotionally with past relationships, never feeling loved and never feeling worthy, more like a trophy played with by pretenders. My husband has and continues to do all these things for me after 13 years of marriage and we are still best friends. He was and is my savior. I did ask for him and I believe he was sent to me, so although I don't consider myself religious I do believe in the greater good and I know I'm being looked after by an enormously powerful universal love and great spirit. Hang on I think I hear Jesus laughing with me. :)) signed Happy Happy Girl.
