Sunshine Superman
Donovan
Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand

Comments/Interpretations
its not Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
its spiderman and green lantern aint got nothing on me so i would change that if i were you k thanks bye
Jorda Adams is just wrong on 6/4/08. It is "Superman or Green Lantern". Period.
sorry bud but thats not right, its superman - hence the title of the song. just to let you know...
Jorda Adams has cob webs in his head.
Someone needs to put these lyrics in order.
uh the song was writen before there was a spiderman
Spider-Man was around when I was in 13 years old in 1965. This song was written after that. However, I have ALWAYS heard Superman mentioned in the song, NOT Spider-Man.
It's Superman. Always was.
Is it "A-bout all the rainbows", "I'll battle the rainbows" or "I'll borrow the rainbows"? Because they all sound possible and sorta make sense.
MY friend sent these words to me. It put a smile on my face and in my heart.
Donovan has some wonky teeth, let me tell ya....
Since when did Donavan's lyrics have to make sense anyway? I am a flower child of the 60's. Superman rules.
i was born in 91... but i agree with cw.
Jorda Adams is either joking, or hard of hearing, or perhaps just a little retarded.
As Marvin says in Pulp Fiction just before he gets his head blown off,
" man, I don't even have an oppinion "
he says 'opinion' actually
Dude, these comments crack me up. Donovan *does* have wonky teeth! And this jorda person has wonky hearing!
He probably thought it was spiderman because of the green goblin.. Of course that has nothing to do with green lantern but I think thats what happened there ahah
I know a beach (Crescent) (Access 5) back in the great days when the beaches were free
as were we
alas
jordan adams deserves to die slow for talking that bullshit!
I could never try to make sense of this song really, but I like it anyway. First part of the song sounds like he's talking about giving up an acid trip for someone he loves...? Bye the way, it IS "Superman or Greenlantern" you can clearly hear him saying that.
Spiderman was written by Stan Lee in 1962. Donovan wrote SunSup around '65 so yes he could have used that lyric, but even Donovan wasn't so high that he would name a song after Superman and forget to repeat the name in the lyrics.
Anyone else see a resemblance between Donavon and John Mayer? Check out the album cover at the top the site.
Of course is Superman... Just remember that's why the name of the song is SUNSHINE SUPERMAN
Acid trip lyrics?? you bet!!
I thought it was "Coulda tripped out to see ya, but I changed my way."
Anybody?
far out man its why argue its obviously "superman" haha (: the sounds name dipshits
Peace.
no it's definitely Superman AND Green Lantern
STILL a child of the sixties and STILL love this song
acid or no-who writes like this anymore??
The last paragraph is about coitus and cunnilingus. The song progresses from his resolve to win her, to courting her, to bedding her and blowing "her little mind". Doesn't matter how wonky he looks-- this song is HOT & still makes me hot... as a FOSTERchild of the 60's.
Jorda-- you're a dumba$$.
Spiderman!
it should be "I could have tripped up TC" it makes more sense
How the hell could you possibly think he's saying Spiderman? The song is called "Sunshine Superman", plus he clearly articulates "Superman" in the song. Get a hearing aid or shut up.
it's funny that 2 years after jorda's initial post he/she is still checking to see if people are talking about how silly he/she is. seems like after 2 years you would change your name too; to your current age... unless someone is just messing with the posts.
Donovan wrote this for his muse Linda. She was his "Supergirl".
I suspect the reference to "Sunshine" is to Californian Sunshine, a particularly delicious type of LSD available in the 60's. Superman is what results. There he is referring to the sexual athletism that LSD engenders.
Will y'all quit fighting. I'm trying to listen to the song!!!!!
caaaaw cacaw
it is superman, but the lyrics are in the wrong order
When he says pick up her hand and blow her mind, probably a ring.
the song is Shunshine Superman. so why the fuck should he be talking about spiderman in the second part of the song. His first part starts off with "Shunshine ...", second part with "Superman..." It's all very clever songwriting. great Song, love the sixties!
I always thought "Sunshine Superman" referred to the singer of the song, which made it confusing that later he refers to "Superman" in the 3rd person.
And, it IS "... coulda tripped a TZ." From the expression "take a TZ, man."
Finally, the actual lyric is "When us ever be 'cool', a thing that -- you know what I mean?" in which the Leitch-man points out that "coolness" is something that cannot be explained in words, but only through experience: the banana-peel experience, to be precise.
If you have any more questions about the song, write me directly, cheesecake@doorknob.org.
It is Superman or Green Lantern. It's a fun song, I always loved it. Back in the day.
I love this girl named Sheila and she wants to trick me into having her baby. Luckily I've had a vascetomy.
Jorda is an idiot.End of convo.
Spiderman? Seriously? Hahahaaaaa! The name of the song should have been the biggest clue ever. One of my favorite songs. It's Superman, Jughead!
Isn't "Sunshine" the name of the girl coming through his a-window today? Please excuse the mis-spellings.
yes this is a love song to the acid goddess...he's not changing his ways at all...he wants to do to her what she does to him.....
Wow! It IS spiderman afterall... Listen closer y'all. Hehe
No way it was Sugar-man, and Green lanterns, they are for the bay-belles. Yes her name is - BBG
Have you even gone back and double-checked after 20 different people said you were wrong? I double-checked, and there is no way in hell that he says "Spider-man or Green Lantern." It's "superman" without a doubt, so either stop messing with us or get your hearing checked.
Spiderman first appeared in 1962. Sunshine Superman was first released in 1966. Regardless it's still Superman in the lyrics...
Yeah it's definitely Spiderman. I've listened to it about 50 times and it's DEFINITELY Spiderman. "Superman" was a printer's error when the album was first pressed and the name has stuck ever since. You're only hearing "Superman" because that's what you expect, from the song title.
TROLLZ
It is NOT Spiderman, it's Superman-pull the foreskin off of your heads and listen.
Friggin kids nowadays-the song is "Sunshine Superman", not "Sunshine Spiderman"
WAIT I was wrong I asked god, he said its spiderman. He is the creater of ears so he probably listens better than all you.
Haha! This dilemma has been for so long everyone listens differently...I listen Donovan singing "Superman" just like he says forget the world" from the song catch the wind...don't get mad about it! We should be enjoying his awesome songs and not worrying on Spiderman or superman...who are they? Still Donovan made his point ;) peace!!!
Donovan was a Dylan wannabe. Where is he now? Still, his songs were cool, no doubt about it. Yeah, "Sunshine Spiderman" that's the ticket!
Flippin' kids!
These comments are hilarious...Tony, these kids think it's Spiderman because those dang IPOD ear buds have bad clarity and are the ruination of all that is audiophile these days!
it is sunshine superman and green lantern who is singing to the girl he loves and letting her know that even superman or green lantern as great as they are have nothing on him (thats donovan) play the tune on you tube and really listen and learn
sorry, Larry. although the original lyrics are as quoted, sunshine superman was released in both the UK and the US in 1966. the first spiderman comic came out in 1962.
scooter, "Donovan was a Dylan wannabe"? What is that supposed to mean? Donovan was very cool back then. I loved his songs. He had many hits. How many have you had?
I'll appollogize now. Sorry for being mean.
mmmmmm nice
mmmm nice
'Sunshine Spiderman' just would not make a good song title Jorda. Maybe you should get your ears checked out man! And not everybody was trying to 'copy' other groups or individuals back then like they are today! We were just 'Groovin' to the Music!'
Even though it’s indeed “Superman”, foreshadowed by the song’s fairly non-sensical title “Sunshine Superman” (the Sunshine part comes through the upbeat music I suppose), the people grooving to this music back in the ‘60’s most likely weren’t overly concerned about what was being said, as they were probably tripping on acid. I was born in 1970, and I could tell & feel that whenever it was played on the classic rock stations when I was a kid. And it still does and did when I heard it at a “Five Guys” after ordering a burger right before I pulled up this webpage (4/20/21) 👍
Donavan was a bubblegum popstar, not a psychedelic rockstar...lame and wonky teeth.
