Bell Bottom Trousers
Guy Lombardo
- written by Moe Jaffe
- as recorded by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians
April 20, 1945 in New York
Once there was a little girl who lived next to me
And she loved a sailor boy, he was only three
Now he's on a battleship in his sailor suit
Just a great big sailor but she thinks he's very cute
(With his bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue
She loves her sailor and he loves her too)
When her sailor boy's away on the ocean blue
Soldier boys all flirt with her but to him she's true
Though they smile and tip their caps and they wink their eyes
She just smiles and shakes her head, then she softly sighs
(Oh, bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue
She loves her sailor and he loves her too)
When her sailor went to sea to see what he could see
She saw that he ate spinach, now he's big as he can be
When he's home they stroll along, they don't give a hoot
She won't let go of his hand, even to salute
If her sailor she can't find on the bounding main
She is hopeful he will soon come home safe again
So they can get married and raise a family
Dress up all their kiddies in sailor's dungarees
(Oh, bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue
She loves her sailor and he loves her too)

Comments/Interpretations
Very cute song. We all loved it back in the day.
That's not the song I used to sing when I was in the Navy.
US Naval Combat Air Crewman
World War II.
(If you can speak, thank a teacher; If you can speak in English, thank a WW II Veteran!!!)
I do not remember it being sang that way, but Old Man Who, I bet you sang it differently than we did. I thougt somewhere it said, "He sank a battle ship in his navy suit, just a great big sailor boy, and he's might cute, wareing bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue and then the last time it was sang..she loves her sailor boy and he's only two. Let me know Old Man how you remember it
Hey, Old Man, I think I found your version of the song under sailors songs. There must have been a version for everyone according to age. When we sang it..at the end it said,"he sank a battle ship in his navy suit, just a great big sailor boy and he's mighty cut (bell bottom) but then the last ending was, "and he's only two"
The song I remember was "Bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue, climbing up thr rigging likr his Daddy used to do"
My Dad use to sing " bell bottom trousers coat of navy blue, once a girl I use to know, tied her apron in a bow,but now those apron strings won't meet , because she met a sailor on the street,". Then it was something about her daddy kicking her out and telling her to go and live of her RINGY RANG TOO . Does any one know how that version went on...??..?????
my brother, Don, was recorded at the age of about 2 years old, singing BELL BOTTOM TROUSERS' while our dad was serving in the navy in New Ginuea in WWII. it was always a precious memory and even more so now. wish we knew where that 33 1/3 recording of his singing it is now....
My Dad was a WW2 submariner on the USS Diablo and proud of it. He used to sing " bell bottom trousers, coats of navy blue, he'll climb the rigging like his Daddy used to do. If you have a Daughter, bounce her on your knee, if you have a Son, send the bastar* out to sea.". I never knew it was a real song. The memories it brings.
So many memories - remember standing on Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago, singing that song whenever a sailor got off the streetcar. There were a lot of sailors coming home to our neighborhood before going to their new duty stations. I'd be less than six years old, but that war was everyone's war, even children.
My mother used to sing this song to me while my father was in the Pacific during that war. Similar to the verse by Mr. Hoss, I learned, If they have a baby boy they'll send him off to sea, and if they have a baby girl they'll bounce her on their knee.
I was very lucky, my dad came home and did bounce me on his knee.
Well I thought it was a song fron WW1 according to my Mom & it was sung as a round ( as we sang it!) ...Bell bottom trousers coat of navy blue, I love my sailor boy & he loves me too. We will get married & have a family; then we'll be happy, happy as can be...singing..Bell ....
