LITTLE LADY MAKE BELIEVE
Guy Lombardo
Dressed up in a gown that trails on the floor,
In a picture hat that mommy wore,
Living in a world that you never saw
My little lady make believe
What a pair of gloves, the fingers don't meet,
Posing in a glass, your joy is complete,
My little lady make believe.
In your little arms the doll you enfold,
Means the world and all to you,
But you could never love the doll that you hold,
Half as much as I love you dear,
Dream your little dreams and may they come true,
May the coming year bring happiness too,
All my future dreams are wrapped up in you
My little lady make believe

Comments/Interpretations
This is not the full song!
It starts with:
Goodness, Gracious, Who's that little lady standing right before my eyes? Heaven only knows, in those fancy clothes, you're so hard to recognize.
Second verse starts:
What a pair of shoes for two tiny feet, what a pair of gloves, the fingers don't meet. Living in a world where joy is complete, My little lady make believe.
The rest seems correct. I'm trying to figure out the origin of this song. We used to have the sheet music when I was a child and my dad sang this song to me. He's past now and I sang it at a family get together and knew the song but didn't know much about it. It figures that Guy Lombardo wrote it, my dad had a lot of his songs and sang them very often.
You are right. What a pair of shoes for two tiny feet starts the second verse. My Dad sang it to me also. I never heard anyone else sing it and I didn't know who wrote it.
My Mom's nearing the end, and is unable to speak. I've been looking for songs she sang to us as kids so I can sing to her. Been trying to remember this one, which was my special song and finally woke up this morning with the "Goodness gracious ... hard to recognize" part in my head, but couldn't get any further. Thank you Ellen and Gerry for filling in the rest here. I'd never have found the lyrics with what I was remembering alone. Reading the bits you've added brings back wonderful memories. :)
I used to sing along to this being played on a neighbour's pianola when I was 6 or 7. So happy to see the whole song once again and remember
you are right My father had a recording of this song played it constantly. It was lost afyer he died 25 yrs ago. Now have it again! My would not believe she thought I made it up. Thanks!!!!!!
Sang this song in the old Manhattan Chapter/Sweet Adelines - about 1953-Loved it then - Love it still. When was it written??
This song brings back so many fond memories of when I was a very young girl in Norfolk, England.
Our school put on a Christmas concert and I was dressed up as "Little Lady Make Believe". I wore one of my mother's dresses which was pale blue and her hat and high heeled shoes. A boy in my class sang the song to me as part of the act and we were a big hit.
