Atmosphere Lyrics
Artist: Joy Division
Album: Permanent
Walk in silence,
Don't walk away, in silence.
See the danger,
Always danger,
Endless talking,
Life rebuilding,
Don't walk away.
Walk in silence,
Don't turn away, in silence.
Your confusion,
My illusion,
Worn like a mask of self-hate,
Confronts and then dies.
Don't walk away.
People like you find it easy,
Naked to see,
Walking on air.
Hunting by the rivers,
Through the streets,
Every corner abandoned too soon,
Set down with due care.
Don't walk away in silence,
Don't walk away.

Comments/Interpretations
cos there are empty playgrounds
and cars driven by the shadows
they have this taste in their mouth
not as salty as you imagined
not as bitter as they sung
the cloud sat on their heads
they couldnt walk away
not in silence
favourite joy division song, utterly timeless and perpetually beautiful.
I agree! I love this song so much!
Yeah me too to bad he killed hem self
I've just seen "Control". It shows us what passed by Ian's mind and makes us think about what we really want for (and from) our lives!
this song is going under my skin every time
perfect song, so dramatic and sad...
i thinks a conversation
coversation with yourself
when i heard this song at the first time it started something inside of my soul...
there were a big mess inside of me...it helped me to clean...the song came in the best moment...

this song is probaly the best joy division song but i like other ones more its just a great song .
a true masterpiece
i saw control and in the end when this song started playing it was amazing it was the best ending for any movie
I believe it to be to his wife Debbie and their diminishing relationship at the time. I wonder if "Walking on air" was perhaps a sign of his hanging suicide?
Control is amazing..this song seems to mean so much more when you see the crematoriam at the end and this is playing..his voice is beautifully harrowing as well.
music of joy division touch the hearth.. i was crying at the end of the control..

First heard this at the end of Control. I'd never heard of Joy Division before, but this song stuck with me and I love it!
I think the "walking on air" part is him seeing other people (his wife, too, perhaps) as going through life with ease (eg: walking on air) and not having the troubles that people like him (introverts?) encounter on a near-constant basis. From his point of view, these extroverts go through life with ease, naked to the world (without self-conscious worry). They happily act out their life rituals (hunting/mating) without concern, and they sometimes discover someone interesting in the "corner" (people like him who need to be treated with due care). They play with them for a while but usually end up abandoning them emotionally once their temporary curiosity is satisfied. And since they don't *feel* things as severely as introverts do, they don't realize the damage they do by abandoning them too soon.
Espresso Forte- as an introvert, I couldn't agree more with your comment. It is entirely relevant to introverts' experiences with extroverts- at least to mine. I always listen to Joy Division when I feel low, because Ian Curtis knew. He felt the way I do... too often I feel that extroverts abandon people like us without much thought to the extent to which they damage us. Don't these people realize that they're all we have? When they leave, I have nobody at all... they can't just do that, it doesn't have the same significance for them as it does for us... could be the difference between life and death for someone.
i love...
This song to me is about fear, despair and inevitable self worthiness of young people being abandoned and left to the state welfare system - particulary around the '80's
Since watching 'Control' for the first time last week I have watched it every day since and bought 'Joy division Greatest Hits' today. Never has a musician spoke to me in such a way as I feel Ian Curtis has with his music. Watching 'Control' was like seeing myself in another time- although Ian Curtis was a lot more talented. An introvert forced into a world full of extroverts where they take you as one of them not understanding how hard each day is in itself just to live. I think anyone who holds prejudice against suicide victims should watch this as I believe homophobics should all watch 'Philledelphia'. It unmasks the sad reality that some people go through. God rest his beautiful soul.
From Ian Curtis obituary:
(Paul Morley & Adrian Thrills)
NME June 1980
'Joy Division will not change The World. But there is value... there has to be.
The value of Joy Division is the value of love.'
this song means so much to me as an introverted person, thanks Espresso Forte for your interpretation its exactly how i feel about it.
Ian, I love you!
I've just watched Control and I love this song...
Ian sings all the songs with passion and pureness, while many other artists don't...
