I watched the movie Control the other day (via movielinks) and discovering that this song was written by Ian about a girl he knew who died of epilepsy, the same condition he had. I have to say this made an already very moving song even more so , discovering its origin.

Strict adherence to the rules of grammar is not necessarily the best thing for lyrics because a song is a kind of sung poem. And as in all poetry, the words must scan; and in a song they must also fit the rhythms of the music. But for the record, Joy Division are awesome and their name came from name for the division of women who worked in the Nazi breeding camps. SS men were encouraged to breed perfect Aryan babies created in a breeding program with perfect Aryan women. These children would then be raised by the State and have no loyalty to their parents, only to Nazi Germany. To my knowledge this did not imply any kind of support for Nazi Germany by the members of JD who, from memory, were all pacifists and anti-racists. The choice of the name was ironic and anti-war.
