First time i heard this song was when i once more had heavy trouble with my parents with age of 16, and it was a night in april and snow fell down. Now i'm 40 years of age and listen to this song every time i have to say goodbye to any of my beloved ones. It makes me deal better with love & dead. Thank you Prince.

The last line .. "Love it isn't love until it's passed" sounds and looks very much to me like "Love it isn't love until it's had" when you see the video of Prince singing it live. It's more poetic to me like that too.

What is this song about?

I'm not gay, but to me it seems that it is a song about a friend who was gay (hence the civil war lyric)and that friend died.

I don't know, but it is a beautiful sad song :)

I have heard the same sentiment many times. However, the thought is misunderstood. This song is about the love of a friend who was struggling with thoughts of suicide. Hence the civil war, between life and death. Tracy was unafraid of death, seeing it as an extension of life. I�m not gay and I have male friends that I feel this strongly about�.

thanks, prince. for writing such an incredible song that sums up what exactly what the pain is like when you lose someone you love, and how they feel when they don't want to carry on, this song makes me hope that one day, i may find the people i lost that i loved, and that maybe there is something after this perfectly imperfect world. The things that you most love come and go too quickly. The only true battle there is, is the battle against yourself.

One of the greatest song ever! I listen it since 1986 on Parade's Album... I was ... 13! Then, I watched the movie Under a cherry moon (prince's movie) where we can hear this song.
There were some copies (eg native singers) but the original was/is/will be the best.
I try to make this song heard by my real best friends (the pure ones) even across the world.
Tks Prince for all the good music, all the shows I saw... As u say "Real music by real musician"... I remember one of your interview in 80's "creating a new music is like meeting a new friend. With that in mind I try to create things u've never heard before"

i was 10 when i started to listen to prince. this was back in 1982.
To me this song is so powerful.
it doesn't really matter if the song is about homosexuality or what ever.
its about love and loosing love. and the grief and sorrow we feel. i can not listen to this song without crying. it has deeply touched me all these years. for those who have not experienced Prince and his multitalent have not lived life to the fullest.
When i die i hope someone will feel bout me like Prince feels about Tracy.
Love to all of you who understand the genius of Prince.

My absolute favourite Prince song. Someone I knew lost a close close friend in April and it snowed the day they passed. This song is so resonant for me. Thank you for helping me through tough times - your music just seemed to speak to me. RIP Prince Roger Nelson.
