Common People (Extended Lyrics) Lyrics
Artist: Pulp
Album: Different Class
She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at St Martin's college
That's where I....
Caught her eye
She told me that her Dad was loaded
I said "In that case I'll have rum and coca-cola."
She said "Fine,".....
And then in thirty seconds time she said
"I want to live like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to sleep with common people
I want to sleep with common people like you."
Oh what else could I do?
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket
I don't know why, but I had to start it somewhere
So it started .... there
I said "Pretend you've got no money."
But she just laughed an said "Oh you're so funny."
I said "Yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here
Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to sleep with common people
You want to sleep with common people like me?"
But she didn't ... understand
She just smiled and held my hand
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
`cos when you're laid in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you called your dad he could stop it all yeah
You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what ever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
And then dance, and drink, and screw
Because there's nothing else to do
Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get you through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along even though they're laughing at you
And the stupid things that you do
Because you think that poor is cool.
Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out.
They'll tear your insides out
`cos everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh
Yeah and the chip stain and grease will come out in the bath
You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why.
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you'll never get it right
`cos when you're laid in bed at night
Watching .... roaches climb the wall
If you called your Dad he could stop it all, Yeah.
Never live like common people
Never do what common people do
Never fail like common people
Never watch your life .... slide out of view
And then dance, and drink, .... and screw
Because there's nothing else to do
I want to live with common people like you.

This is a bloody great song, I love William Shatner version the most... it's the perfect combination.... for some reason when I listen to it just makes me happy
simply great point of view!!!
absolutely great ! ! !
lovely.
I just love to find pure honest poetry in the most unexpected places.
Amazing song and amazing lyrics. William's version rocks, I like the way he narrates the lyrics with just the right attitude and tone in his voice. Joe Jackson does some great singing too! Wow.
Greetings from Greece! One of the greatest songs ever!
its really a anthem!!!!
Great lyrics, great music, voice, message, tempo... like marshall said, poetry for eyes and ears.
amazing lyrics!! "because you think poor is cool" ever notice how stars try to dress down - dress poor like you? like us? our leaders campaign slogan "i am just like you!" a man of the people? a man of the poor? fruads.
Ahhh this song is so true to my life! :D Haha
In the extended version, when the lead is singing:
Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out.
They'll tear your insides out
there's a voice speaking in the background. Sounds like David Bowie. What is he saying?
The best pop song ever written. No arguments please :).
I hadn't heard it since the mid 90's. I was a French girl in London with hardly any money, I suppose I didn't have to make an big effort to be "common" even though a french girl will never be common you know...(getting a bit pretentious there, hey teasing you...) Just had to work hard to earn a living... never had "roaches" on my walls, but I did have to stay with an heroin addict for a fortnight, the poor guy was trying to give up...
Did rent a flat above a shop in N6 as far as I ca remember... Sorry for the long comment but reminded me lots and lots. The purpose is not to writ a book, right?
Big up for Jarvis...
The French and the English love each other they just don't want to admit it... (I hope...)
LOVE AND HATE RELATIONSHIP...
Jarvis cocker IS MY GOD
Fck the Greeks anyway.
@ Virginie Maurice. Personally, I love the French (I find how rude you are SO frickin' funny) but I can tell you this, the Kiwi's (people of New Zealand where I now live) in general, hate the French, the English (well certainly my Dad) hate the French and from the way French act a lot of the time to Brits abroad, I think the French hate the English. I am sure, however, I'd like you! :-)
Damn, this song is so perfect it almost makes me sick! I really can't think of a more sincere, honest, and accurate song. God these guys were awesome. "Like a Friend" is also great and no surprise is also by Pulp. Why can't bands make music like this anymore? Where is the depth and substance? I really miss the music from that era. Well done everyone, really well done.
The version with William Shatner is amazing!!!
I was in London when this song came out...
Coming from Skopje - Macedonia, and being dirt poor at that time...and...studying at Saint Martins, this song has some REAL meaning to me...
I effin' LOVE Jarvis Cocker for writing this.
Poetry to my ears. A memory revisited. (Haven't heard it in a long time...hope this makes sense)
Jarvis Cocker does it best... Glasto 95/6 (can't remember which) headlining the Pyramid stage
