Ebb Tide Lyrics
Artist: Righteous Brothers
First the tide rushes in
Plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea
And the sea is very still once more
So I rush to your side
Like the oncoming tide
With one burning thought
Will your arms open wide
At last we're face to face
And as we kiss through an embrace
I can tell, I can feel
You are love, your are real
Really mine in the rain
In the dark, in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb
I'm at peace in the web of your arms

Great song. Melodrama of the "Impossible Dream" variety (at least in the Righteous Brothers version). The lyrics are best felt and not examined because they don't make sense. He, like a tide, rushes in to touch her(the shore). And when he does he finds peace like the tide at its ebb (furthest from shore)? Her arms are a web--mixed methaphors.
I was confused about the meaning of ebb tide thinking it meant low tide.
Actually it is the period as the tide recedes between high and low tides (taking several hours). Perhaps it makes more sense than I thought. The ebbing tide may be seen as relaxing (as in a warm embrace after lovemaking) after the forceful rise.
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever. The song rises just like a wave - it peaks crashes on the "shore" and then becomes calm just like the ocean. I've often thought about this song because it takes just one moment in time. It is so unusual and poignant. That one moment when you reach out to someone and hope they will return that love. I really can't think of any other song that talks about that one moment like this song does.
I remember seeing Jerry Calona (an American comedian) sing Ebb Tide at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool, probably 1950's. I wonder if he wrote it or had it written for him. I wonder if anyone else rembers seeing him.
Clearly a metaphor for full release after a good rub and a tug.
this makes perfect sense if your first kiss was at the beach =)
I agree with you Jennie. Very well put.
possibly "warmth" of your arms would have been a better word.
This song brings back so many memories of being in love, and dancing in my lovers arms. It still makes me smile each time I hear it....it was the most romantic gesture from a man who never showed his feelings.
A most incredible song with brilliant lyrics; a song sung in the most stunningly awesome way by The Righteous Brothers. I was a teenager when this first came out and it still gives me goose-bumps. Another one which is awesome is Scot Walker ex Walker Brothers called Johanna. Good stuff---they don't make music like this anymore.
jennie you hit it
Jennie, I think I love you!
Does the universe have an ebb, are we in a cosmos where we are subject to waves that crash in or whimper out?
Most men would (if they would dare admit it^^) give their left arm to be able to express themselves like this... me included. But, I'm only a man :p Thank you Jennie - you explained it fully and eloquently. Smart girl!
Beautiful melody and lyrics. Incomparable Righteous Brothers with such well suited melodramatic orchestration evokes, at least in some of us, the memories of young love on the shore. For me it recollects evenings strolling on Hawaiian shores years ago as a young Army Officer when love was still a magical and emotionally powerful thing.
For those who are in love or have been in love and want so much to feel love, this song has it all. An old R & B singer, Arthur Prysock, did an arrangement of this. His intonation and delivery are what love ballads are all about, recapturing or reliving a moment of love in real time, with the same passion and longing of the original encounter. Romance is a dying art and this song is one of its last vestiges.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Ebb Tide was done in the mid-fifties. The range of this song makes it practically impossible to reach the highs as we grow older... and I so wanted to once again sing it without beginning in a deep bass. I agree, it is the best dream-like, simply-put love song.
Ebb Tide is a beautiful song (lyrics and music)and has been "our song" (my wife and I)since since 1963.
My husband is dying and the tide is receeding into the sea
This song is as close to perfect as a song can be. It is a poem that expresses such passion, love and hope. It captures the one part of life that many people never know, nor never know they are without.
I bought the music sheet (.25)
and used to play it on the piano.
my composer asked me if I had ever
heard of it.

Few songs contain the music and lyrics that reach the heights of absolute emotional perfection. Ebb Tide is one of them. It is love and passion in the deepest sense. I dedicate it to all the romances that have ever been and to those yet to be.
Alot of people recorded this song. The Righteous Bros. version is nice, but the greatest of all is Arthur Prysook. It's on YouTube!
This is my favorite song of all time. I have it as part of my e-mail address. I agree with Jennie who posted her comment back on 9/14/08. It is the most beautiful and poignant poem turned to music that I have ever heard. I absolute love it!!
Everything is said by Barbara, it is so totally perfect for the best love song ever. Our ocean front home in Rodanthe, NC is named for the RB's song. I love the RB's the are the very best !
Check out Tim Waurick's version of this song (www.timtracks.com) - he sings all of the parts - he's a wonder.
This has been a most meaningful love song for all our 57 years of marriage. It was a special moment in our lives on the beach in 1953, when we made a life long commitment of love, as we could tell, we could feel. love was real. I was at peace in the web of his arms, but now he is gone as the tide rushed in and the sea is very still.
Norma, your comments are priceless. What a wonderful poem to have i your heart all your married life. At this point in my life, I think of it as a metaphor for life and at the point of death, as we go to our heavenly home, we can know his love is real.
Beautiful song! For me the meaning is simple. You meet someone and they become your world until one day they are no longer there because they were called Home. Now it is your time and you finally meet at last face to face and ultimately being at peace in the web of their arms.
1953/Korea. My husband was on the Yellow Sea and he and
the guys" played that record over and over. So he told me about it. I listen in the states and it became on of "our songs
.
Yes truly a beautiful song the best version done acapella by The Universals also a nice job done by The Avalons
Bobby Hatfield could sing this so much better than anyone else. The song is beautiful, and after it hits it height, it becomes so very peaceful. I wish Bobby could have found true peace and taken care of his health. What a terrible loss it was for all who loved him.
Jennie was right. One of the best love songs ever
He is describing that after high tide and the water recedes and the water is peaceful again. He is anxious to touch his lover as the high tide is to touch the shore. Once the they make love he is at piece again. Just a metaphor for his longing for her.
At age 6 I was in a dance recital and we performed to Ebb Tide with a soloist. 20 little girls lined the stage holding large hoops with cellophane streamers that rustled. At the appropriate times we'd rush from the back of the stage to the front and lift our hoops over our head and then dash back wards. This music lives within me.
I love the lyrics, I get the meaning of it, such a romantic love song.....it gives me goose bumps....I had a soul mate, and lost him when he was young, through an accident..❤️❤️❤️
These lyrics are incorrect and incomplete. They are that way in several sites....
"...I can tell, I can feel
You are love, your are real
Really mine {in the wind,} in the rain
In the dark, in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb..."
Listen to the song.... in the wind is there and yet the lyrics don't have it...
Finally found them! Loved this song, was it in the 60's? I was on vacation, it was high tide, and the tide was rushing in, and the song came back to me. But I couldn't remember all the words. Now I can put the song to rest and enjoy my tidal experience!
I can remember singing this song in a piano bar with a very accomplished piano player. As I remember this was when I was beginning my music career in the '60s. There were three girls sitting in the front row and they had tears running down their chick. I remember this like it was yesterday. To me it was really a compliment that I could affect someone like that.
