Things I Miss the Most Lyrics

Artist: Steely Dan
Album: Everything Must Go

I don't mind the quiet
Or the lonely nights
I don't miss the funky attitudes
And I don't miss the fights
I lie on the couch 'til suppertime
And hunker down and read the Post
And that's when I remember the things I miss the most:

The talk
The sex
Somebody to trust
The Audi TT
The house on the Vineyard
The house on the Gulf Coast
These are the things I miss the most

I kinda like frying up
My sad cuisine
Getting in bed and curling up with a girlie magazine
Sometimes in the corner of my eye
I see that adorable ghost
And then ba-boom I remember the things I miss the most

The talk
The sex
Somebody to trust
The comfy Eames chair
The good copper pans
The '54 Strat
These are the things I miss the most

I had a little birdy friend
By morning she was gone
Birdie good-bye
Birdie bye bye

I'm learning how to meditate
So far so good
I'm building the Andrea Doria out of balsa wood
The days really don't last forever
But it's getting pretty damn close
And that's when I remember the things I miss the most

The talk
The sex
Somebody to trust
The Audi TT
The house on the Vineyard
The house on the Gulf Coast
These are the things I miss the most

This is such a bleak, fatalistic song, even by the 'Dan's standards. Amazing how they can wed such a borderline-morbid lyric to an irresistible blues-fusion groove.

as usual, i dunno whether this is from real life or an imagined situation... whatever, fine music backing the lyrics.

a bit bleak but lovingly stated, she got the house on the vineyard and the audi tt?

The bridge is awesome, lovely tune

I like how he says "the '54 Strat", like she got his guitar too...that's gotta hurt haha..Anyway, cool song

I don't find this necessarily bleak or fatalistic. In usual Steely Dan fashion they have brillanlty turned phrases that express those early days, weeks, months after a breakup.

I love this song just a very cooll groove and so real on what a empty house and memories hold love the sound

If the situation was not a real life experience for the artist, they captured the emotion of a fatal break up perfectly. All with very cool music.
