Gypsy Lyrics
Artist: Suzanne Vega
Album: Solitude Standing
You come from far away
With pictures in your eyes
Of coffeeshops and morning streets
In the blue and silent sunrise
But night is the cathedral
Where we recognized the sign
We strangers know each other now
As part of the whole design
Oh, hold me like a baby
That will not fall asleep
Curl me up inside you
And let me hear you through the heat
You are the jester of this courtyard
With a smile like a girl's
Distracted by the women
With the dimples and the curls
By the pretty and the mischievous
By the timid and the blessed
By the blowing skirts of ladies
Who promise to gather you to their breast
Oh, hold me like a baby...
You have hands of raining water
And that earring in your ear
The wisdom on your face
Denies the number of your years
With the fingers of the potter
And the laughing tale of the fool
The arranger of disorder
With your strange and simple rules
Yes now I've met me another spinner
Of strange and gauzy threads
With a long and slender body
And a bump upon the head
Oh, hold me like a baby...
With a long and slender body
And the sweetest softest hands
And we'll blow away forever soon
And go on to different lands
And please do not ever look for me
But with me you will stay
And you will hear yourself in song
Blowing by one day
Oh, hold me like a baby...

Comments/Interpretations
great song. Thank you
When I first really heard this song, I played it over and over again for almost an hour. It's one of those rare songs that instantly mesmerized me.
I love this song so much, its warm, optimistic and feel good. It will be played at my funeral instead of prayers
I have been singing this song since I was fourteen. It is truely a classic off a beautifully written album. Saw Suzanne in London last year, she has a voice of honey what an outstanding performer..
One of my all time favourite songs.
I cannot stop listening to this song. Its meaningful and her voice is magical.
Suzanne wrote it about a guy from liverpool she met when she was 18 years old, they had 2 months of love, and he left back to england, its amazing and sad for me especially the line :"we'll blow away forever soon
And go on to different lands
And please do not ever look for me
But with me you will stay
And you will hear yourself in song
Blowing by one day" ...i wonder if suzanne met him since then...
this is a beautiful song. I identify deeply with the person she sings about
it's "oh hold me like a baby that will not fall asleep"
this song feeding me a whole day
I grew up loving this song and I sing it to my children every night.
My favorite song!
Suzanne said something like:"well I wrote him this song, and he, he gave me his bandana...."
Magical!! There are no other words to describe this song! I love you Suzanne!
This is just awesome! Suzanne, you're the greatest.

"I grew up loving this song and I sing it to my children every night."
Lovely, really nice.
I saw Suzanne performing in Amsterdam last year and she played this song - still with the same intensity, and with a special sparkle in her eyes. She still means every word.
Theres a few of us still out there roaming the lands and th cities ans the seas...wouldnt have it any other way..what a journey my love.
Great melody, very warm.
She revealed at her barbican gig here in London the other day that he was in fact in the audience. And that In Liverpool was about him too. So amazing and touching.
I like this
I also think this one of her best songs. And one of the best songs I have ever heard. Also experienced her a long time ago performing this song live on stage. Wonderful
I read "The Perks of be a Wallflower" and I...read about this song...I think that the best thing I've ever done was looked for GYPSY.!! Love this woman.! I'm 16 and it's weird that a girl of this age listens this kind of music.! Feel proud being a lover of this song.! ♥♥♥
Paola Horan, i did exactly the same! i was reading that great book and i saw the playlist of Charlie... Amazing song :)
