My City Was Gone Lyrics
Artist: The Pretenders
I WENT BACK TO OHIO
BUT MY CITY WAS GONE
THERE WAS NO TRAIN STATION
THERE WAS NO DOWNTOWN
SOUTH HOWARD HAD DISAPPEARED
ALL MY FAVORITE PLACES
MY CITY HAD BEEN PULLED DOWN
REDUCED TO PARKING SPACES
A, O, WAY TO GO OHIO
WELL I WENT BACK TO OHIO
BUT MY FAMILY WAS GONE
I STOOD ON THE BACK PORCH
THERE WAS NOBODY HOME
I WAS STUNNED AND AMAZED
MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
SLOWLY SWIRLED PAST
LIKE THE WIND THROUGH THE TREES
A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO
I WENT BACK TO OHIO
BUT MY PRETTY COUNTRYSIDE
HAD BEEN PAVED DOWN THE MIDDLE
BY A GOVERNMENT THAT HAD NO PRIDE
THE FARMS OF OHIO
HAD BEEN REPLACED BY SHOPPING MALLS
AND MUZAK FILLED THE AIR
FROM SENECA TO CUYAHOGA FALLS
SAID, A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO

Comments/Interpretations
i love this song and im from ohio so i can really connect she has an amazing
The sexiest voice in Rock.
No interpretation necessary. The words are true; a fait accompli and good morning!
This song is is no drill.
A O Way To Go Strickland!
RUSH RULES
lol rush? maybe if this was a man singing, and a canadian band, and 10 years earlier... otherwise it's THE PRETENDERS sir.
He's right though. Rush does rule.
Got to love Chrissy. Remember the Bucket Shop in Highland Square.
Rush (Limbaugh)'s opening song for his radio show.
Indiana is next.
This is definitely one of my all time favorites of the 80's. The lyrics and music are hard to beat and it plays real well when working out on the treadmill. The only downside is the truth in what she's referring to.
Not bad for a one-chord song. A little monotonous, but it shows what you can do.
Not bad but still basically shit
Chrissy hits it!
love her voice
LOVE THIS SONG so simple and fun and sad all rolled toether...

@Norm - Chrissie Hynde is from Ohio
Chrissy is from Akron, Ohio.
People from Ohio these are racist suburbanites, totally lame and despised all around the US.
People from Ohio are racist suburbanites, totally lame and despised all around the US. Why are there so many of them in New York City? They should stay home in their white cornfed cul de sacs.
Hey Chrissy, you shouldn't generalize about people from a geographical area based on some limited exposure you may have had. As your post clearly shows, closed minded idiots can be found everywhere.
"Chrissie Hynde, originally from Akron, Ohio, moved to London in 1973 ... "
Ever hear of Wikipedia Norm?
In Chrissy's ignorant remarks we see the irony of classic projection from someone apparently without a shred of logic or self awareness. In other words, she accuses OTHER people of being exactly what SHE is, but she lacks the basic logic and self awareness (or sanity) to see it for herself. It always blows my mind that people can be so dense as to make blanket statements about groups of people at all, let alone tens of millions of people who are defined merely by an arbitrary line on a map, when any common sense at all would tell them that for so many reasons those statements make zero sense and couldn't possibly be accurate. In Chrissy's twisted mind, it's not ok to supposedly hate someone because of race, but it IS ok to hate someone simply because of where they're from. Idiocy.
I just read Reckless and had to check out the lyrics to My City Was Gone. She mentions Cuyahoga a few times and it was gnawing at me.
