Once Upon A Time
Tony Bennett
Words by Lee Adams and Music by Charles Strouse
Did not chart, although it was recorded by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Robert
Goulet, Al Martino, Jim Reeves, Diahann Carroll, Vic Damone, and Bobby Darin
Sung in the Broadway musical "All American" by Ray Bolger and Eileen Herlie
Once upon a time a girl with moonlight in her eyes
Put her hand in mine and said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time, very long ago
Once upon a time we sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone
How the breeze ruffled up her hair
How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn't there
We were young and didn't have a care
Where did it go?
Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew
Everything was ours, how happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time never comes again

Comments/Interpretations
So very sweet
This song makes me cry everytime.
Very nostalgic- of the times/memories people have
Probably the nicest song I have ever heard.
I saw Tony Bennett in concert a couple of years ago. He ended with this song. This song has always made me cry and when the lights went up I had tears streaming down my face.
i think that in the second paragraph, the lyrics are "once upon a hill," not the repeated "once upon a time" (not grammatically correct but very very poetic)
That song perfectly describes the way I feel about my deceased wife. Even when she was in her fifties I thought of her as young. She was the happiest person I have ever known.
I miss you Patty and always will....once upon time a girl with moonlight in her eyes put her hand in mine and said she loved me so. Rest in peace sweet heart, you are in my heart forever.
75 years old, married 52 years and there is still moonlight in her eyes. Many trees have come and gone; we laugh as though tomorrow was never there. Once upon a time is every new day.
I plan on using this 60's song in my opening screenplay of Bravo Company 4th platoon, Vietnam. I was sitting atop a bunker overlooking the South China Sea (1967) thinking of home! www.9thivn.org
"Everything was ours, how happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time never comes again"
Always brings back my husband who died in Vietnam, and how all these years later, I truly know that "once upon a time" will never come again. And yet how wonderful it is to remember "a time the world was sweeter than we knew."
Forever and ever we said, and so it's been.
How much more wistful can a lyric get? "Once upon a time never comes again."
