When I was a little bitty boy
Just up off-a floor
We used to go down to Grandmas house
Every monthend or so
Wed chicken pie and country ham
N homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about Grandmas house
Was her great big feather bed
It was nine feet high and six feet wide
Soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty-leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
Itd hold eight kids n four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didnt get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On Grandmas feather bed
After the supper wed sit around the fire
The old folksd spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war
And my Grannd sing a ballad or two
Id sit and listen and watch the fire
Till the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing Id know Id wake up in the morning
In the middle of the old feather bed
It was nine feet high and six feet wide
Soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty-leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
Itd hold eight kids n four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didnt get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On Grandmas feather bed
Well I love my Ma, I love my Pa
Love Granny and Grandpa too
Been fishing with my uncle, I rassled with my cousin
I even kissed Aunt Lou
But if ever had to make a choice
I guess it ought to be said
That Id trade them all plus the gal down the road
For Grandmas feather bed
It was nine feet high and six feet wide
Soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty-leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
Itd hold eight kids n four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didnt get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On Grandmas feather bed

Comments/Interpretations
Anyone know what John Denver mumbles about "the gal down the road" after the 3rd verse?
lol yeah i have the same question... i cant hear what he says.
I first heard this song recently on You Tube on Bluebeardits channel. His version is wonderful also! Thanks for posting the lyrics!
so cool this song.My lifestyle still mirrors the words, the song represents my life, at least now I know the the right words. Thankyou.
if it's a live version you're talking about he says "well, maybe I better reconsider about the gal down the road"...hope that's what you're after
i like the piggy part!
I think it is "I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road"
"Maybe I'd better reconsider about the gal down the road"
i love this song*******
The above responses are correct when they say the next line is "maybe I better reconsider 'bout the girl down the road"; IF it's the version from the live album "An Evening With John Denver".
However, if it it's the version from the rare live album "Live In London", then the next line is actually a short conversation between John and another band member. It goes like this: "Wait a minute, John". "Not a good deal, huh? Guess it'd get pretty cold all alone." It's been a while since I listened to that album, since it's never been released on CD. So I'm not sure if those are the exact quotes, but it's close. I will have to check it to be exactly sure.
I will also check the original studio version from the album "Back Home Again". I believe that it is also a little different. But I haven't heard that version in quite some time, either.
wow this was an amaizing song for our fifth grade program this year w@ a gre@ song
Well, maybe I better think twice 'bout that gal down the road...
Love the song, am a long time fan & now my grandkids are aswell, we have great fun, riding in the car, the music up high & all bopping to 'Grandmas feather bed'. I only wish I knew exactly what was said about the girl down the road & grandmas feathr bed on my 'Back Home Again' album.
On the 'Live in London' album the drummer stops him and says "Not the girl down the road" John then turns and says to the crowd "Not the girl down the road, well, she is a fox, maybe I could trade aunt Lou instead!"
hey i have a solo in this song 4 my shchool concert
reminds me of high school!
I think I remember JD performing this with the Muppets.
i am 9 years old and i am in 4th grade. in my music class we are sining that song
Sounds like he says "Don't say much for the gal down the road. . . "
takes me back......way back :)
the line IS "i'd trade them all plus the gal down the road", meaning, the bed was so great and he had such fun, that he'd even trade the girl from down the road (presumably an awesome, good looking gal) for the feather bed. pretty straightforward...
He says, "Best thing about the bed is the gal down the road"
Thanks erik. I've wanted to know what he says about the girl down the road (on the Back Home Again Album) since I was a kid listening to it on a tape in the car on trips with my dad. Finally, 30 years later, mystery solved. Thank you very much.
He mumbles: “best thing yet is the gal down the road”
Thank you Erik ❤️
