ONLY A FOOL WOULD SAY THAT Lyrics

Artist: Steely Dan
Album: Can't Buy A Thrill

A world become one
Of salads and sun
Only a fool would say that
A boy with a plan
A natural man
Wearing a white stetson hat
Unhand that gun begone
There's no one to fire upon
If he's holding it high
He's telling a lie

CHORUS:
I heard it was you
Talkin' 'bout a world
Where all is free
It just couldn't be
And only a fool would say that

The man in the street
Draggin' his feet
Don't wanna hear the bad news
Imagine your face
There is his place
Standing inside his brown shoes
You do his nine to five
Drag yourself home half alive
And there on the screen
A man with a dream

CHORUS

Anybody on the street
Has murder in his eyes
You feel no pain
And you're younger
Then you realize

CHORUS

The line 'There is his place' should probably read, 'There IN his place'.

I don't know how they managed to write a song about Barack Obama, 30 years ago.

Italian Boy, first this song actually has a deeper meaning... your comment insults steely dan and our past president. fuck you
by Ignatius on 7/14/2009 9:13am
Woke up with this song in my head for no apparent reason. Haven't heard it in years. Such an apt description of life.

I love this song, but at the same time I realize Im the fool=P
by BarrySoetoro on 4/5/2010 8:11am
Barack Obama, AKA Barry Soetoro, promised not to sign executive orders... yet he signed one on his first day in office sealing his birth certificate, medical records, school records, and passport.

He (rightfully) raged against Bush's Patriot Act... yet just extended it.

He promised not to have special interest groups involved, yet has SEIU, UAW, ACORN, GE, Google, Microsoft, Exxon-Mobil... it goes on and on.

He bashed Bush for starting 2 wars, yet started a 3rd in Pakistan and the death toll in Afghanistan has doubled. (Where's the fake media outrage now?)

You got suckered again, America. Another lying, warmongering puppet dictator. The federal government relies on your ignorance...
by Daemon Paranoid on 7/13/2010 11:45pm
I don't know how they managed to write a song about Bill Clinton 20 years ago.

Great song - disappointing to see people slagging other people off on this page. Why does this seem to be a by-product of almost any given comments page?? Also, please stop talking about political histories and economics, no amount of straw clutching can link this song to George B. Enjoy the music! That is all.

by Walter Becker on 2/13/2011 8:56pm
To answer Tim's post of 11/09, the last line of the song, omitted from virtually every site that has our lyrics is "sólo un tonto diría eso" which means...get ready for it...only a fool would say that.
by Andrea Roades on 3/13/2011 5:07pm
Thank you Mr. Walter Becker!
by btinsley on 3/29/2011 2:15pm
those are playful lyrics....i get it
by jford on 4/21/2011 8:44pm
The Spanish line at the end is spoken by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, he's even credited on the album sleeve, get some facts people
by djon on 9/7/2011 8:48pm
Jesus people, it's just a song. Get past the refrain.

1972.. hmm... what was going on then. Oh yeah, LBJ (with a white Stetson hat) had us in Vietnam, wanted the Vietnamese, the world, to be "free", like us, right (salads and sun). The average joe was beat down by the nightly body count on the news, dutifully paying his taxes to support the war. Sound familiar?

Every single album, every single track by Steely Dan is utter genius. Of course I have favorites, but even those seem to change frequently. There are alot of amazing musicians in the world, but there is something about "SD" music that gives me this feeling inside that no other music has ever paralleled. Good to see that they are still kickin' it! Thanks Fagan and Becker for consistently amazing tunes.

... Citizen Steely Dan and three happy days of sweet memories of my brother -- a true and faithful Steely Dan fan if ever there was one.

by marino on 5/9/2013 12:03am
incredibile questa canzone. mi mette allegria
by Dan Yablonka on 7/2/2013 1:04am
Ricky Burton apparently has a brain only capable of one track. (2nd comment). He can't even listen to a song with the word "fool" in it w/out attaching it to whatever person is at the top of his shit list. Where was his "gift" when Bush put us here anyway??!!
by Biggus_dykus on 12/27/2013 4:13pm
Typical early Steely Dan jive lyrics signifying nothing.

Trying to make any sense of meaning out of these lyrics?

Only a FOOL would do that.
by susan mallory on 2/13/2014 12:19pm
Best musicians {ever} love me some Steely Dan......
by Hawaiiman on 7/10/2014 7:32am
Actually the second chorus says"...where everything's greed, only a fool would say that" The first time around is over positive, the second over negative. Get it?
